10 Fall 2015 Runway Trends You Should Be Shopping on Sale

Trends are typically hard to shop on sale—if you wait for them to reach the discount section, there's a risk that, well, they won't be trending any more. That said, if you examine the best runway trends from fall 2015 with an expert's eye, you'll notice both classic shapes and looks we've seen slowly becoming more and more popular. These are the guys you can successfully hunt for in the sale section right now. Since they're not brand brand new, there's stuff out there to shop, and their enduring popularity means everything will feel fresh for years to come.
Trend #1: double-breasted jackets and wide-leg trousers

Gucci fall 2015, Chloé fall 2015

"They key to successful sale shopping is to look for pieces that will stand the test of time, and a beautifully tailored pantsuit is a great investment. It's timeless and very much of the moment this season," Eve Thomas, fashion director at The Outnet, told us, pointing to the double-breasted, wide-leg varieties that walked the runway at shows like Gucci and Chloé.
Trend #2: metallic

Louis Vuitton fall 2015, Nonoo fall 2015

Certain trends are so laser-focused that it feels nearly impossible they'll bubble back up within the next decade (think of the graphic word play that showed up frequently throughout the spring '14 collections or the spark for furry bag key chains that Fendi's Karlito spurred—cute, but without long-term staying power). Conversely, other trends reappear constantly, like metallic, spotted at both Louis Vuitton and Nonoo. Its perennial nature mean it's often cycling through the sale section.
Trend #3: pale pink

Prada fall 2015, Cushnie et Ochs fall 2015

"Soft pink and rose tones have been around for a long time now, and Miuccia Prada cemented their value at the Prada show," Thomas pointed out. Since it's a shade that designers have been playing with for a while, you stand a good chance of scoring reductions on any remaining pieces from past collections.
Trend #4: bomber jackets

3.1 Phillip Lim fall 2015, Louis Vuitton fall 2015

The sporty jacket has been trending upward for a few seasons now, meaning that some will surely have found their way to the sale section. "Bombers have been making a comeback for a little while, showing up again at the recent resort collections, a sure sign they're here to stay." It's a versatile trend and done in multiple fabrics, prints, and colors, allowing it to be a standout statement coat or your everyday, about-town pull-on.
Trend #5: flares

Marni fall 2015, Zimmermann fall 2015

After the popularity of flared denim, get ready to see the silhouette come into all categories. Thomas notes it as a big trend she forecasts staying around through spring, so look to scoop up deals on pieces in lightweight fabrics or brights that you could pair with silky blouses post-fall too.
Trend #6: the '70s

Zimmermann fall 2015, MSGM fall 2015

Designers have been mining inspiration from the '70s for a few seasons now, resulting in every stylish aspect of the generation hitting store shelves (and, now, the sale rack). "The love affair with all things '70s has continued strongly into this fall," Thomas notes, suggesting shoppers look for maxiskirts and dresses, slim sweaters, embroidered pieces, and peasant blouses. "Look for delicate, silk-chiffon blouses and pussy bow detailing."
Trend #7: burgundy

Proenza Schouler fall 2015, Tommy Hilfiger fall 2015

Certain autumnal shades can be counted on time and time again to pop up on the fall runways, making them a smart investment now and forever. Case in point? Rich burgundy, done as coats, dresses, trousers, and more.
Trend #8: green

Dolce & Gabbana fall 2015, Elie Saab fall 2015

"Dark and army greens are another key trend color and a perennial fall neutral," Thomas said. The shade can be shopped casually in skinny jeans and button-ups or done more formally as office-ready dresses and evening attire.
Trend #9: jumpsuits

Chloé fall 2015, Zuhair Murad fall 2015

Whether casual or cocktail-ready, Thomas says "a jumpsuit is worth investing in. They've been around for a few seasons and have been cemented as a go-to for modern, busy women."
Trend #10: bright faux fur

Versace fall 2015, MSGM fall 2015

The playful look of bright faux fur is sticking around, meaning that pieces from seasons past will look totally current all through this winter. The look can be as bold as you like, whether done in vivid hip-length coats or as simple accent spots on blazers and jackets.
As to what trends not to shop on sale? Anything that got your heart racing, but you doubt will have much shelf life. You'll want to wear them immediately, so buy when you find one you like (and look for high-street versions from shops that cater to of-the-moment designs, like Zara and H&M, so you won't risk feeling like you wasted your cash if it's a single-season trend).
