15 WAYS TO WEAR FLAT SHOES AT YOUR WEDDING
A Smart Trick For Making Sure Your Outfits Are Always Amazing
Have you ever heard of the third-piece rule? We hadn’t either until we came across a former Nordstrom employee’s interesting account of her manager's outfit advice. In order to encourage a more stylish sales staff, some retail associates are given the style guidance to wear outfits on the job comprised of three pieces, not including your shoes. Your pants and top are your first and second pieces, and your third piece is an extra outfit element such as a jacket, blazer, sweater, vest or statement accessory. The Cut reported that the third-piece rule is in effect at Banana Republic and, according to one of our editors who previously worked retail at Madewell, they encourage the practice too.
So what’s so special about a third piece? It adds nuance to an otherwise run-of-the-mill outfit, making you look put together, polished, more interesting, and like you put a little effort into your look. Essentially, it’s a simple rule of thumb that promotes more stylish outfit choices. If you’re in doubt about the third-piece’s power, just take a look at some of our street-style favorites—you’ll notice all have adopted the guideline, with many even adding fourth and fifth pieces to take the effect to the next level.
Scroll down to check out some photos of the rule in practice. We swear you’re going to start asking yourself, “Am I wearing my third piece?” before you leave the house—we already are!

THE COLOR OF THE YEAR 2015
It’s official: The Pantone Color of the Year of 2015 is… Marsala. This creamy wine hue is quite a bit different than last year’s Radiant Orchid, but it seems more versatile. Not as dramatic as oxblood or even burgundy, it’s an all-seasons wine that can go from winter to spring depending on what you wear it with. While the Color of the Year can be applied to just about anything – from makeup to interior design – it will most notably pop up all over the beauty and fashion world throughout the year.
Pantone Color of the Year: Marsala in Fashion & Beauty
essie In Stitches, LORAC ‘Pro Matte’ in Mauve, Ribbed Crop Top, Dark Pink Fedora, NARS Unlawful, Ilia Lipstick in Femme Fatale, Smashbox Halo Blush in Warm Glow, Pink Aztec Print Cape, H&M Burgundy Skirt, Purple Pointed Court Shoes
You’re definitely going to be seeing this color on the runways and in your favorite fashion magazines, but it’s also ideal for everyday wear. Right now is the perfect time of year to kick off Marsala, as it looks fabulous in textured knits and thick fabrics and goes perfectly with everyone’s beloved gold accessories. When it comes to spring, I see it being paired with powder blues and even simply white to brighten it up. Like the shades in the cape above, pairing Marsala with blush tones is the perfect way to go monochromatic. As for beauty, is there anything more sultry than this color for your lips? You can also add a hint of Marsala on your cheeks for a deep pink look that would pair stunningly with brown tones and smoky eyes.
