10 ELLE.COM EDITORS SHARE THEIR FAVORITE NAIL POLISHES FOR FALL

Though we do not want summer to end (how did it go by so fast?), part of us is looking forward to all those little things that come with fall: the crispness in the air, layering sweaters and wearing leather jackets again, and swapping out our bright summer clothes and makeup for a moodier color palette. One of the best ways to accent this new fall look, is with a fresh manicure. Here, are our the polishes our editors swear by for autumn.

1. Laura Mercier Nail Lacquer in Coco Suede

"I never pick my nail color according to trends. Since last spring, I have been obsessed with varying shades of brown nail polishes so that my hands appear to be all one color. I've continued this into summer and will probably do so into fall until something changes my mind."-Danielle Prescod, fashion editor
$18; saksfifthavenue.com

2. OPI Nail Lacquer in Italian Love Affair

"I love a neutral nude with a pink hue, it's very Kim Kardashian. I wear a lot of black so it's a nice contrast. The perfect accent to my open toe booties." -Erin Toland, art director

$9.50; ulta.com

3. Deborah Lippman Blue Orchid

"I have such a crush on Deborah Lippman's Blue Orchid nail lacquer. It's the perfect hazy shade of blue—a little more grown up than my old favorite, Hard Candy's Sky, but with the same cloudy, dreamy vibe. I think I'll wear it with my new Frame Denim jeans and vintage Luella blazer during Fashion Week shows—and it'll look so cute peeking out of my gold Miu Miu platform sandals during the after parties." -Faran Krentcil, special projects editor,

$18; deborahlippmann.com

4. Essie Fall in Line

"I can’t wait to bust out Essie’s new dusty teal hue, "Fall in Line.” Usually I’m not one for funky colors, but I get excited thinking about my hands wrapped around a steaming Hot Toddy, my lambs’ ear-colored digits poking out from an oversize Prabal knit. A girl can dream, can’t she?"-Justine Harman, features editor
$8.50; ulta.com

5. Zoya Pepper

"I'm a big fan of Zoya's polishes (love that they're Big 5 free, and the brush is really easy to use) and I expect this dark red shade will be on my toes all through the winter."-Kate Winick, social media editor

$9; zoya.com

6. JINsoon Tess Giberson Nocturne

“Last fall I was obsessed with Essie’s After School Boy Blazer midnight blue polish, but a few weeks ago I was introduced to the JINsoon Tess Giberson Collection and nocturne, a gunmetal dark grey, has won me over. I have always loved a dark polish that almost looks black, but I’ve never been so drawn to a metallic before. The slight shimmer takes away anything that might be construed as goth, and makes such a dark color seem a little delicate.”-Megan Cahn, beauty editor

$18; jinsoon.com

7. OPI Nail Lacquer in Rich Chocolate

"For fall, I love a deep, burnt shade, like OPI's purple-tinged "rich chocolate" from their Brazil collection." -Rebecca Moss, producer

$9.5; ulta.com

8. Tom Ford Nail Laquer Toasted Sugar

"I’m a nude nail type of girl, but you’d be amazed how how difficult it is to find the perfect shade of nude polish. Tom Ford’s Toasted Sugar is as close to perfect as I’ve found thus far. It makes my nails look lacquered and long, and lasts a full week and a half (if I don’t wash dishes…which I try my very best not to!)"-Ruthie Friedlander, deputy editor

$32; tomford.com

9. Essie Nail Color in Bordeaux

"I do Essie's Bordeaux—for fall I love a clean neutral or a rich, deep red color.  To me, the darker hue is a classic twist on the traditional red and lends the perfect hint of sexiness to my otherwise understated beauty look." -Sally Holmes, news editor

$8.50; target.com

10. CND Vinylux Impossibly Plush

"I normally like to keep my nails very dark in the fall, but I’m all about nudes right now—specifically, nudes that are muddled by a tinge of gray. CND is the only nail lacquer I ever use since I was introduced to it a few years ago, because the colors are always on point and it’s virtually unchippable. I suspect that my autumn beauty uniform will be the brand’s beige-ish shade Impossibly Plush, paired with a very dark wine-stained lip." -Victoria Hoff, editorial assistant

$9.90; cnd.com

Fall Fashion Trend 2014: One of the best things about New York Fashion

While most of my gal pals & I stay at the Empire Hotel {which is right across the street from most of the shows at Lincoln Center}, sometimes people stay elsewhere. But there is always a very good chance of bumping into someone you know every time you cross the street into the Lincoln Center Square. As I was heading to the DVF show {snapping pictures for the blog beforehand}, I ran into my old friend Caroline from the blog House of Harper. If you haven’t had a chance to check out her site, it offers a well curated combination of lifestyle meets fashion. I adore Caroline because not only is she a Texas gal but she enjoys the pomegranate margarita’s and guacamole just as much as I do. We headed to Rosa Mexicana just after shooting these pictures for a nice catch up session.
P.S. The DVF show was awesome {as always}.

The Fashion Secrets of Kate Lanphear, T’s Outgoing Women’s Style Director

Today, it was announced that T’s women’s style director, Kate Lanphear, will become the next editor-in-chief of Maxim magazine. Beyond her vast and varied contributions to the world of T, Lanphear has also drawn a global following for her distinctive rock-inspired look — a look that made her one of the original stars of the street-style world and continues to exert influence today.
Here, as we revisit some of her most memorable outfits, Lanphear shares the secrets behind her incomparable style.
Above all, be yourself…

“Style is about evolving your own uniform that reflects who you are and how you feel most comfortable. For me that’s often jeans and a T-shirt. I’ve always been into rock music and something kind of sexy and black.”

“You know you’ve seen something good at a fashion show when it makes you reconsider how you want to get dressed in the morning. There are plenty of times when you want to test drive a trend to see if it’s going to become part of the uniform.”

“I wear a lot of jewelry, but it all has meaning — a bracelet given by a dear friend, something that I picked up in a market overseas. It’s like wearing memories. The Guns ‘n’ Roses T-shirts I wear are the ones I was wearing as a teenager.”

“I had this hair color when I was a kid and now I have to fry it — basically white-knuckle it until it’s cooked. I’ve had it this short and this bleached for a long time. Tommy Buckett at Serge Normant has cut my hair since I’ve been in New York.”

“I use Shimmer Lights — it’s this shampoo grannies use, and it’s purple. That’s the only product I use, except for a straightening iron.”

“I don’t really do makeup. It really is about the sunglasses. If you’re tired, no amount of eye cream is going to help you, I find. I only ever wear Ray-Ban Wayfarers — I’ve tried some other ones, but those have emerged as uniform-worthy.”

“It was a great season for coats, and I splurged on a Calvin Klein coat, look seven from the fall/winter show, because a coat is something you wear every day. It’s cozy, fuzzy wool and single breasted, and of course it’s black.”

“It’s either sky-high or Chucks.”

“It is difficult to express just how deeply grateful I am to have had the opportunity at T to learn from such a dynamic editor. Deborah Needleman is a force. Not only is she one of the smartest, savviest editors I have ever worked for, she is also the most generous in spirit and mentorship.”
