A collared shirt is not only a must-have wardrobe staple, it’s often required in dress from school uniforms to tons of job positions and more. It can come in the form of a blouse or casual button up t-shirt, but no matter what, one thing is true: the possibilities for accessorizing this top are endless.
How to Wear A Collared Shirt
Just Add Jewelry
Some of my favorite ways to accessorize basic tops like this are statement baubles. Hello, bright springy jewels. Tucking a necklace – make sure the chain isn’t too long or too snug – under the collar is an easy way to sport this statement. If you’re working with a white top or even chambray, try a bright neon color or a necklace full of multicolored gems. If you have a nice blouse that needs something extra, adding a metallic necklace can keep it dressy without looking too stuffy. This is a great way to sport collars if you have limitations in how you can dress up your bottom half, and other jewelry like drop earrings or bold bracelets are welcomed too!
Get Preppy
It’s true, I’ve mentioned layering on multiple topics from my closet organization tips to fall fashion, but adding a layer to your top works here too, and even in spring. You don’t have to go crazy when layering – a top with a collar layered with a top without one will do just fine, and can even be pulled off with jewelry too. A light crewneck sweater that allows your collar and cuffs to peek through is perfect. You can reverse it and layer your unbuttoned top over a top as well for a more casual look.
Loose Layers
Although it seems like the only way to rock a sweater and button up is to go preppy – think all the above paired with a pencil skirt and kitten heels – you can actually create a casual chic vibe just by switching up your sweater. Instead of a crewneck, to achieve this look, you should opt for slouchy open cardigans like the ones below.

Conversely, you can layer a loose lace top or asymmetrical hemline underneath. Plus, if you’re able to snag a long top to layer, you can go super casual by pairing this with leggings (that is, if you don’t need to dress up your collared shirt for work!) – comfy, much?
