10 Makeup Tips Every Woman Should Know (According to a Makeup Artist)

Makeup Mistake: Holding Your Brush the Wrong Way

When applying foundation with a brush, hold the very end of it. You will have slightly less control but a much softer touch that'll give you a more natural finish. Bonus tip: Use one pump of liquid foundation for sheer coverage and two pumps for medium.

We like Dior Fluid Foundation Brush ($45, sephora.com) and La Mer The Treatment Fluid Foundation ($85,nordstrom.com).

Makeup Mistake: Powdering Without a Plan

Loose powder (try Chanel Poudre Universelle $52,chanel.com) is ground super fine, which helps it minimize shine and diffuse light to blur imperfections. But that doesn'tmean you should go nuts and put it everywhere. Use a large brush, like the Synthetic Domed Multipurpose Brush from Sonia Kashuk ($18, target.com), to powder the T-zone, or take a more detailed approach and use an eye contour brush like the Roque Cozzette S165 Large Eye Contour Brush ($19, roquecozzette.com) to powder under the eyes, along the sides of the nose, and across any skin you want to look smoother.

Makeup Mistake: Using Too Much Concealer

With concealer, you want to get the most coverage with the least amount of product. Use your finger in a tapping motion to build thin layers of concealer under your eyes, close to your nose. Then use a concealer brush (try It Cosmetics Airbrush Blurring Concealer Brush #103, $16, ulta.com) to buff out the edges.

Makeup Mistake: Not Really Cleaning Your Brushes

Creamy products like foundation and eyeliner build up in your makeup tools, and brush cleansers, soap, and shampoo don't always get it all out. Instead, put several drops of waterproof eye makeup remover into a cup or the palm of your hand. Swirl the brush in it to loosen old makeup.

Rinse. Then, swirl the brush in a drop of face wash to remove the makeup and remover. Rinse again. Extra credit: Comb through the brush with a fine-tooth comb to remove even more product.

Makeup Mistake: Complicating Your Eye-Makeup Routine

Practically every (actually wearable) eye look includes a smudged dark eyeliner, a medium-shade neutral shadow, and mascara. Like an LBD, your perfect eye trio, can be dressed up or down in a million ways. One example? Accessorize with winged liquid eyeliner, a dark shadow at the corner, or false lashes for a night out. We guarantee if you keep the basic three items on hand, getting ready for anything will be a snap.

Try this trio: Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner in Blackest Black ($9, drugstore.com), L'Oréal Voluminous Manga Mascara in Black Angel ($8, ulta.com), and Guerlain Mono Eyeshadow in Hey Nude ($34,bloomingdales.com).

Makeup Mistake: Filling in Your Eyebrows With Only One Color

Whether you're blond or brunette, perfect your brows with a gray-brown shade of taupe, and a cool shade of dark brown. Use an angled eyeliner brush to fill the entire brow with the lighter shade. Then fill in any sparse areas, or even accentuate the arch with a pointed eyeliner brush and the deeper shade. Comb through with brow gel or a clean mascara wand to blend it evenly.

Note: This tip works for those deeper skin tones as well—the deeper shade darkens the entire brow, and the lighter shade will add softness.

Makeup Mistake: Ignoring Your Upper Waterlines

Lining your upper waterline doesn't have to involve weird eyelid contortions. Apply liner (we like a gel pencil like CoverGirl Perfect Point Plus Eye Liner, $6, drugstore.com) to your lower lash and waterline

Now blink—hard. When you squeeze your eye shut, some of the liner will transfer to the upper waterline. Repeat to add intensity and you're done! Get drugstore discount code

Makeup Mistake: Putting Blush in the Wrong Place

Blush can make you look instantly more energized. Apply color on the apples of the cheeks using a smaller brush like the MAC 187 Duo Fibre Face (Ebay.com, maccosmetics.com) in a circular motion. Blend it out or soften it using a larger clean brush. But be careful: Blush swept all the way up to the hairline or under the cheekbones can go '80s-in-a-bad-wayfast. Makeup Mistake: Using a Death Grip on Your Eyeliner

Applying eyeliner is one of the most awkward things to do when it comes to makeup. To make it easier, notice how your hand is positioned. If it is clenched around the pencil for dear life, your fist will get in the way of being able to see what you're doing. Instead, hold the pencil as if you were going to sign your name. You want your fingers to look elegant, so keep them stretched long. Then, when you look in the mirror, make sure your hand is rotated toward the side of your face so it doesn't block your reflection. Use a long, freshly sharpened pencil and draw with the side of the point. Press and drag the pencil instead of using the tip for better control.

Makeup Mistake: Using the Wrong Lip Liner

Lip liners are an essential in any makeup artist's kit, and they should be in yours too. Here are three you need:

1. A lip pencil that's the same color as your lipstick. Create crisp lines or fill in the entire lip with pencil before layering lipstick so the color lasts longer.
2. A lip pencil that matches your natural lip color. Use this shade of pencil to line just outside your lips to create a plumper look.
3. A lip pencil one shade deeper than your nude lipstick. Nude lipsticks can blend into your skin tone, making lips seem to disappear. Line lips with this pencil before applying lipstick for stronger definition or after for softer definition.

Top 2015 Summer Hair Trends To Try

Making a statement this summer is easier than ever with the 2015 summer hair trends. From relaxed and playful to bold and daring, there’s something perfect for everyone. Some trends don’t even require a new style, just a few accessories. Try all of them out and see which ones work best for you.
Slicked Back Hair
Forget about hiding oily hair. The trend this summer is the slicked back look. You can take advantage of your natural oils or add in a thick moisturizing oil to slick hair back from your face. It’s a bold statement, especially when you add waves or curls from the neck down.
Recommended cruelty free product: Paul Mitchell Sculpting Gel or Dry Wax

Golden Hair Accessories
A simple way to look trendy this summer is to add a golden hair accessory. It could be something as simple as a larger golden hair pin or a thick golden head band. Gold matches everything, so it’s easy to incorporate.
Complex Ponytails
While simple ponytails are always popular, being a little more creative is more trendy in 2015. For instance, try a double layered ponytail or a twist on the classic French twist that ends in a ponytail. Experiment and have fun with this one. Sites like Pinterest will give you plenty of inspiration.

Up-Do Braids
Messy braids are still stylish, but up-do braids are front and center this season. Wrap around braids, braided buns or even a French braid are all perfect. Add in some golden accessories for an even more trendy look.
Floral Accessories
Get ready to see flowers everywhere in 2015. Floral accessories such as a large flowery barrettes and hair pins are ideal for adding a bit of summer to your hair. Both large and small flowers are in style. Try pinning small ones to your braid or add a larger one just above your ear.

Boho Wave
For the perfect casual, stylish look, try the Boho wave. These large, natural looking waves started gaining ground last year and have only grown more popular. They’re already being seen at large festivals. They’re easy to get, especially with longer hair.
Cruelty free product recommendation: Twist by Oliver Shampoo and Conditioner
Bad or Choppy Bobs
The “bad bob” or “lob” is cute and easy to manage during the summer. It’s also incredibly popular for 2015. It’s basically just a normal bob with choppy ends. It’s fun and definitely doesn’t conform to standards. That’s also the reason it’s getting more popular every day.

The Look: Kawaii Inspired Fashion

Kawaii has had a huge influence on fashion for many years now, quickly traveling from Japan to other cultures around the globe. Some people think of kawaii as strictly an Asian trend, but these adorable characters, candy-colored prints and pastel colors have emerged basically anywhere women who love to wear all things cute live. Some of the most popular European, Australian and American brands have adopted at least some sort of kawaii influence, and it’s definitely led to amazing new trends for spring! I love the ice cream cone and galaxy prints, but there’s a lot to choose from.

Dresses

Ice Cream Scoop Skater Dress, Sweet Home Panorama Dress, Wallpaper Princess Dress
If you love the idea of kawaii, but aren’t exactly sure if you can plan an entire outfit around the look (it’s easy to get carried away, right?), just opting for a single dress and parring down your accessories is a great choice. Even just choosing kawaii-inspired colors like pastel pinks, purples and light blue will start to give off the playful vibe you’re looking for.

Tops

Rain Trench in Ice Cream Print, Galaxy Print Sweatshirt, Wildfox Sweatshirt in Tie Dye
Um hello, ice cream cone trench coat. Pastels look wonderful with light colored denim so you if you don’t want to get carried away, simply pair it with some jeans. Of course, it’s always fun to go all out when trying out a trend you’ve just gotten into, and the extras below will do the trick…

Extras

Pastel Dreamer Backpack, ASOS Unicorn Socks, Bunny Bow Scrunchie by LoveFactoryNYC, Cool Cat Sunglasses
You don’t have to fly to Tokyo to find be able to accessorize kawaii-style (though that’s a major bonus). Etsy is full of awesome kawaii influenced accessories (like the scrunchie), and you can also find fun aqua and pink details elsewhere online. Anyone who is familiar with kawaii knows that this type of fashion is often sported from head to toe, socks to big bow hair accessories, but it’s just as fun to mix and match with other items in your closet.

Make a Statement: Accents That Show Personality

We all have days when we wear simple outfits but wish for a little oomph without going full on galaxy dress. Whether work requires you to tone down your attire or you’re decked out in basics because you were in a rush, your personality doesn’t have to be suppressed by your wardrobe. Express yourself by allowing your accents to elevate your spirit. Here are 4 items that exude personality without being obnoxiously overpowering.

Accents That Show Personality

Bold Socks - There is something delightfully sneaky about wearing wild socks. Maybe it’s because only you know how fantastic they are when hidden in your shoes, or you love how diamonds peek out of your sandals or booties to tease all that you love. Typically socks are a bland necessity, not a unique style accent. Thanks to Living Royal that all has changed. From unicorns to emojis to kawaii style to cats, they have the wildest, most electrifying ankle and calf socks. I’m obsessed!

Statement Earrings - Statement necklaces are an automatic go-to accessory when trying to dress up your wardrobe, but statement earrings deserve as much of the limelight. If you’re wearing a plain white T or chambray top gem stone dangles will add sophistication to an otherwise casual look. If rocker or boho chic is more your style, then grab silver spikes or turquoise chandeliers and let your edgy side shine.

Custom Shape Sunglasses - As of late, I’ve been all about sunnies with a hint of unorthodox design. From the third eye shades of designers Coco & Breezy to my new cat glasses, I can’t get enough. Because you’ll likely take them off when you get down to business, your sunglasses can show off your playful and adventurous side without being a distraction when things get serious. Ever have that awkward moment when someone seems more focused on your accessories than your words? Statement sunnies let you be you, without totally stealing the stage.

iPhone Case - Ok, so it’s not a traditional accessory. But who doesn’t have their phone in their hand most of the time? Unlike jewelry or clothing, your cell phone case can loudly and proudly showcase your personality without being inappropriate for any occasion. With sites like Society6 and Zero Gravity your harmonious life can shine through with the Culture Clash case or you can go feline diva with the Cat Clutch case. Whether adorned in your favorite life motto or encouraging your inner dreamer, your case will liven up everything from a monochromatic outfit to a rich hued leather clutch. No cover is too bold, and every one has a story.

Swimsuits Worth the Weird Tan Lines

As I get older, I become less and less afraid to take risks and try new things – especially when it comes to style. Whether it’s a bikini or one piece, there’s no reason to stick to what you’ve worn in the past. There’s no better time than now to try a daring new summer look, even if it does mean flaunting a few out of the ordinary tan lines throughout the season.
Swimsuits Worth the Weird Tan Lines | michellephan.com

1. Mesh Contrast – A bikini comprised of alternating mesh like the RVCA Cross Back Bikini is sexy without quite bearing it all.

2. Tassle Triangle – Forget fringe, this Tassel Triangle Bikini Top allows you to accessorize your swimwear with no effort at all. Pair it with bejeweled bottoms for a glam look.

3. Strappy Bandeau – Summer’s most fun colors contrast with jet black in this bustier-style one piece.

4. Kitten Fever – Like the pieces in my kawaii fashion roundup, there’s nothing wrong with adding a little cute to your daily style! And what’s cuter than kitties AND cupcakes like the ones in this ModCloth bikini? Kitties and cupcakes displayed on a retro style swimsuit, of course.

5. Color Block – Taking color block to a new level, this Brazil Bandeau is cut out on the sides and back. Sure, your tan will also be a color block, but it’s worth it to be able to flaunt this on the beach.

6. Racing Stripes – Another color block style, this pastel swimsuit top mixes sexy and sporty with a strappy racer back. It’s also available in a hot pink combo.

7. Versatile One Piece – With the option to go straps, halter, or without, this Minkpink one piece has it all: a supportive underwire busy, mesh side panels and a dreamy floral pattern. Who says one-pieces are boring?

8. Negative Space – Another tempting one piece for all you bikini lovers, the angular cutouts of a swimsuit like this Shirred Waist Swimsuit offer a modern, geo-inspired twist on a classic ruched style.

9. Sporty Spice – Sporty two pieces aren’t just for swim meets. If athletic is your go-to swimsuit style, amp it up with a killer color combo (peach and mint, anyone?) and fun text or graphics like this Mermaid bikini.
