8 Ways to Spend Less on Back-to-School Shopping

Back-to-school shopping is an inevitable part of life for people with kids. Between school supplies, backpacks, new clothes and other necessities, the costs can really add up, especially if you have more than one child. These tips will help you save money where you can so your kids can have a great back-to-school experience without breaking the bank.

1. Shop Consignment Sales

Where I live, there are several great consignment sales throughout the year that offer gently used clothing for kids of all ages at greatly reduced prices. This works best for younger kids who aren’t brand-loyal, but with some hunting you can even find things that older kids will be happy with (you may need to play up that buying used is eco-friendly, or head to a vintage shop to make buying used more fun for older kids).
Consignment shops and thrift stores can also be a great source of clothing. Like your favorites on Facebook and they’ll let you know when the super-bargain days are. One shop here has days where everything is half off, which means you can score some really excellent deals.

2. Get it Tax Free

Many states have tax-free weekends where you can buy clothing and school supplies without having to pay sales tax. Yes, you’ll have to fight everyone else who’s shopping on those precious days, but if you’re the sort of person who likes the Black Friday spirit, you can score some good deals.
Some stores have special sales on tax-free weekends, making it even more worth your while to head out.

3. Comparison Shop

Everyone from superstores to the grocery store to the dollar store seems to sell school supplies at back-to-school time, and they often have a couple of items that are really cheap. If you have time to go to several stores, you can score the best deals at each one—nabbing the 10 cent crayons at one place and the two for a dollar notebooks elsewhere.
If that’s not an option for you, investigate if any of the stores do price matching, where you can bring in an ad from another store and get their low price where you are shopping. That can save you a lot of time and effort (not to mention gas money).

4. Sign up for Emails or Like Shops on Facebook

If you’re looking for clothing deals, sign up for emails and like you favorite shops on Facebook. Then you’ll know when the things you need are on sale and when new clearance items are added. It may be worth it to wait a couple of weeks into the school year to buy some items if they’re likely to be on sale in the new future.

5. Stock up at Clearance Sales

Speaking of sales, the end-of-summer sales and clearance racks that are regular fixtures at some stores can be your best friends. Summer stuff goes on sale long before the winter stuff is needed, so you can buy some new things that can be used right away. Or shop when the clothing is a little off-season if you can predict what size your child might be the next time that season rolls around. I’ve bought clothing marked down to a couple of dollars or less because it was deep in the wrong season.

6. Don’t Buy Too Much

It’s really tempting, especially when you’re getting a good deal, to buy a ton of new stuff, but if your kid isn’t likely to go through more than two boxes of crayons in a year, it’s a waste of money to buy more. What’s more, you’ll have to find a place to store it in the meantime, remember where you put it when it is needed and so on. It’s not really worth it to go off-list or buy duplicates of things that aren’t likely to be used in the near future.

7. Use What You Have

If you are the sort of person who tends to buy too much, make sure you check the house for items your child could use before you shop. I buy a ton of notebooks every year, and there are usually some left over, for instance. You may also find that some of last year’s clothing, like jeans and sweaters, may still be useable if your child hasn’t grown too much. Shop at home first.

8. Personalize What You Can

If some of those old clothes fit fine but aren’t looking great, think about how you might alter them to make them better than new. You can add patches to cover holes or stains, add embroidery, dye shirts, or if you have some sewing skills, even turn a dress into a skirt or take in the sides of a boxy shirt to make it more form-fitting.

Sneakers making their mark in men's fashion

MILAN, Italy -- Ferragamo creative director Massimiliano Giornetti knew sneakers had truly arrived as a fashion statement when, at a formal dinner in Rome, he spotted a former Italian senator of a certain age wearing them with a pinstripe suit.

"It was not provocative," Giornetti said. "It was just the way you can dress now -- to see that impeccable Italian suit with an eccentric touch of red socks and sneakers really underlined how sneakers are part of an elegant wardrobe."

For Giornetti, who started as Ferragamo menswear creative director 15 years ago before adding the women's portfolio, it is not so much about the sneaker as an object in and of itself, but about a coming-of-age in menswear. "It is about breaking your rules, expressing your style and your persona," Giornetti said.

Walk around the men's shoe department of any upscale department store and leather footwear still dominates, but sneakers are getting a perch too. Don't mistake this for "normcore," a unisex fashion trend of everyday clothes that enjoyed a moment among fashionistas last spring. Style-watchers say it's about freedom of expression, where the formal and the informal mix.

And fashionistas are willing to pay dress-shoe prices for the materials and workmanship that go into luxury sneakers.

"For many men, they treat sneaker purchases in exactly the same way they would treat shoe purchases," said Sam Lobban, senior buyer with MRPORTER.COM, an on-line magazine and e-commerce site aimed at men.

Ferragamo, which is celebrating the 100th anniversary of company founder Salvatore Ferragamo's emigration from Italy to the U.S. where he entered the luxury business through fine leather footwear, launched a new collection of sneakers this month. They include colour block high-tops and sneakers in exotic skins, with prices ranging from $540 to for $3,400 for crocodile.

The list of designers sending sneakers down the fashion runways is growing, including Raf Simons, Rick Owens, Balenciaga, Givenchy and Missoni.

Lanvin was one of the first to include sneakers in their collection.

"Interestingly, the original style with patent toe-cap remains in the collection and is updated every season," Lobban said.

GQ has approved eight sneakers to wear with suits -- ranging from a pair of Alexander Wang pebbled leather uppers, at $495, to Adidas' Stan Smith, price tag $75, which Lobban said was the trainer to wear for summer 2014 "for its understated style."

The appeal of sneakers is rooted in comfort, and Franklin Eugene, a Dubai-based stylist, said "it just makes sense" that men's fashion houses would get in the game, noting that the range is growing ever more "stunning" in recent months.

"While there will always be those who opine that the only proper place for sneakers is the gym, as long there are men looking for comfort and style in the same product, sneakers will have a place in men's fashion," he said.

That sneaker-sporting Italian senator needed no memo or seal of approval for his style choice. Mario d'Urso, 74 and a banker by profession, topped Vanity Fair's international best-dressed list in 2011. Something of a style iconoclast, has been wearing sneakers anywhere they aren't frowned upon -- which excludes Buckingham Palace, where he has been a guest, and Harry's Bar in London -- for some time now.

"Now that you have put a bug in my ear, I think I'll wear them to a dinner I am hosting tomorrow night in Rome," d'Urso said by phone.

Recently one of my clients told me how she was so excited that she had actually worn everything she bought on our first clothes shopping trip together.

What really struck me, was that I never thought that it would be any other way, but her comment reminded me how often women do go clothes shopping and how very often simply end up not wearing what they purchased.

Have you found yourself doing the same when clothes shopping, therefore experiencing buyer’s remorse? Well, it happens to the best of us, but the trick is to learn from mistakes so as to not keep repeating them.

Here are 4 Don’ts to keep in mind the next time you feel the urge to go clothes shopping.

1.    Just because the price is right, does not mean you’ll ever wear it. If it isn’t right for you at full price, it won’t look better on you at 50% off.

2.    Resist the urge to buy what you already have. Ex: Another black dress or pants.

3.    Don’t buy the ‘must have’ color, unless it looks good on you!

4.    Never buy something too big or small. Only buy what fits now, as you can always shop again if and when you need another size.

WINTER 2014 FASHION TRENDS

With the days growing shorter and the snow piling up, winter is here seemingly quicker than Ohio could have expected. This means a whole new realm of fashion, filled with boots and sweaters, has opened its doors and keeping up to date on all the latest winter fashion trends can be a formidable task.
Heather Marcello, store manager at Express Southern Park, detailed the trends for this upcoming season.
“One trend that should meet every closet is capes and ponchos. They should be paired with a tight pair of leather or patterned leggings,” Marcello said. “This can also go for oversized and comfortable, cozy sweaters.”

The style is suited for customization, mixing and matching to customize an outfit for either a night on the town or a lazy night in.
Playing with different proportions, layering heavy knits with short skirts or slim pants is also a way to look great, from casual to dressy. Having a top with more detail will even out the plain bottoms and give off a sophisticated air.
Though these styles can be mixed and interchanged, mixing too many different patterns together is just as unfavorable as using the same pattern together with the whole outfit.
Fur — real and faux — is likely to be a popular look this season as well. Fur can be worn to complete any outfit, whether it is a fur hat or fur boots.

Marcello advised that spending money on sudden, popular trends may seem like a good idea now, but will leave a wallet empty in the long run. That’s why it’s best to buy clothing items that can be interchanged or mixed and matched as to get the most use out of them, and with these fall winter trends, that should not be hard to do.
