THE COLOR OF THE YEAR 2015

It’s official: The Pantone Color of the Year of 2015 is… Marsala. This creamy wine hue is quite a bit different than last year’s Radiant Orchid, but it seems more versatile. Not as dramatic as oxblood or even burgundy, it’s an all-seasons wine that can go from winter to spring depending on what you wear it with. While the Color of the Year can be applied to just about anything – from makeup to interior design – it will most notably pop up all over the beauty and fashion world throughout the year.

Pantone Color of the Year: Marsala in Fashion & Beauty

essie In Stitches, LORAC ‘Pro Matte’ in Mauve, Ribbed Crop Top, Dark Pink Fedora, NARS Unlawful, Ilia Lipstick in Femme Fatale, Smashbox Halo Blush in Warm Glow, Pink Aztec Print Cape, H&M Burgundy Skirt, Purple Pointed Court Shoes

You’re definitely going to be seeing this color on the runways and in your favorite fashion magazines, but it’s also ideal for everyday wear. Right now is the perfect time of year to kick off Marsala, as it looks fabulous in textured knits and thick fabrics and goes perfectly with everyone’s beloved gold accessories. When it comes to spring, I see it being paired with powder blues and even simply white to brighten it up. Like the shades in the cape above, pairing Marsala with blush tones is the perfect way to go monochromatic. As for beauty, is there anything more sultry than this color for your lips? You can also add a hint of Marsala on your cheeks for a deep pink look that would pair stunningly with brown tones and smoky eyes.

FASHION HACKS: HOUSEHOLD ITEMS TO THE RESCUE

If there is a hack for something beauty or fashion related, you can guarantee I’ll try it. It’s always gratifying to know that I can revive a wardrobe staple and win the battle of me versus mishap – Mish 1: Fashion Failure 0. With the help of common household items that’s always how it plays out – style issues remedied! Here are a few fashion hacks that will help you have piece of mind that no tarnish, stain, smell or static will keep you from your favorite pieces.

Fashion Hacks

Deodorant on your heels – How many times have you bought a new pair of shoes and the heel slipped causing a blister on your foot? No more! Swipe some deodorant along the back of your heel before putting your shoes on and it will prevent rubbing and blisters.

Safety pins inside clothes - If you’re struggling with static cling, try attaching a safety pin to the inside of your clothing. This will help pull the electricity that makes static cling from your clothes and leave dresses and tops flowing freely. I’ve covered other sneaky ways to beat static cling, here.

De-fuzz with a pumice stone - If your sweaters ball up or have unwanted fuzz, gently rub a pumice stone over the fabric. The stone will grab fuzz, leaving your sweaters and blouses looking brand new.

Vodka as Febreze - If your clothes need a refresh or you’ve bought vintage pieces that smell a little musty, spritz one part vodka with two parts water on your clothes to banish smell. Throw fresh lavender (or essential oils) into the mix and let it sit overnight before using to really give your clothes a blast of freshness.

Olive oil on zippers – Your favorite jeans or party dress can get thrown by the wayside if you can’t get your zipper up. For those stubborn moments, put a dab of olive oil on the zipper where it’s stuck and then pull. The oil will coat the teeth and get you into your clothes in no time.

Double stick tape on blouses - You can buy Hollywood Fashion Tape, or you can just grab some double sided tape to fix any gapping clothes. No more bra showing on button up blouses or hems that are too long – scour your office or craft drawers, tear off some tape and go.

Toothpaste on your silver - Now that all of your clothes are in place and fitting properly, the next issue is your accessories looking sharp. If they appear tarnished or dull, rub a little toothpaste over them, rub with a wash cloth and rinse with warm water. Viola! They’ll sparkle and shine.

Ways to Reimagine Your White T-Shirt

With another fashion week come and gone, who doesn’t want to rush to the mall for a whole new wardrobe? As tempting as this is, it isn’t always the best way to curb spending beyond your means. Instead, why not reimagine something you already have and love? Or, if you really do need to get out and buy new clothes, take this time to invest in one of the most important basics you’ll ever own: the white tee.

how to style a white t-shirt

Mossimo boyfriend crewneck, boden scoop neck, J. Crew cotton v-neck tee, Madewell slub crewneck, Topshop pocket T, boden high neckline

Having a comfortable, cute and functional white tee is just as essential as your undergarments and bras. It’s the first building block in a conscious wardrobe. But let’s face it, wearing a T-shirt and jeans everyday doesn’t exactly scream fashion forward. So in the interest of creating something new with what you already have, here are a few of my favorite classically chic ways to style a white tee:

6 ways to reimagine your white t-shirt

1. Tuck it in. Sometimes trends of the years past ought to stay in the past, but sometimes they become timeless tricks for creating something out of nothing! Tucking your crew or v-neck into high waist jeans or partially tucking a slub-neck makes a basic top go from looking like an afterthought to intentional.

2. Make it sexy. Yes, it is possible to make your white tee a little sexy. If your top is thin or slightly sheer, forgo your undershirt to add intrigue in a tasteful way. But if that’s too much, you can still make it more flirty by layering over a lacy tank or colorful bandeau. You’re walking a fine line here, so it may take some tweaking before you get the combo quite right!

3. Change up your pants game. Those of you who have reservations about going too bold with fashion can see this as an entry into the world of prints because a white tee is going to balance out your look so you don’t feel too out of our comfort zone while experimenting. No need to worry whether a funky print or flowing material will clash or look frumpy – the white tee can be worn with any pair. PS – Same goes for skirts too! Pencil skirts in particular pair perfectly with basic tees no matter the print.

4. White out. Conversely, a fabulous way to reimagine the basics is to pair things you normally wouldn’t. White on white or any sort of matchy-matchy monochromatic look will instantly break you out of your closet rut. It’s simple, yet not something you see everyday.

5. Tie it up. Another 90s trend, the basic side tie, can take a worn tee and make it more fitted, as well as be a playful way of showing midriff in the summertime. Make a small knot on one of the front sides so the trim of your top is slightly asymmetrical, then pair with a denim vest or moto jacket to add an edgy spin.

6. Make a statement. Similar to printed pants, statement jewels are another way to step up an otherwise plain outfit. For spring, think bib collar necklaces or bright drop earrings to shift the focus from your tee to your accessory. Again, this balances out your look while offering that oomph a white tee doesn’t normally have.

Fashion Trends: Jacquemus's Eternal Sunshine

Simon Porte Jacquemus, the two-time LVMH Prize finalist and designer behind the cultish womenswear label Jacquemus, has not deleted, nor contemplated deleting, his ever-growing Instagram account where he shares whimsical musings in a triptych format (his seaside diving portraits are particularly popular).

Only half a dozen or so collections into his career, Jacquemus has managed to clearly and quickly define his eponymous brand. However, he is aiming to get to the root of things and explore the evolution of man. "She's not the easy or cool girl that you see in Paris," he says of his Fall/Winter 2015 muse. "I'm exploring beauty, dreams, not in the princess way, but poetry...I don't know if people will get it, but it's what I'm exploring."

Jacquemus has carved out a niche in the fashion landscape so specific that he's already feeling a need redefine his message. For Fall 2015, that meant working with his hands, quite literally. Evident in the collection was a motif of simple outlines of his five fingers, spread in a star formation, derived from "one of [his] earliest drawings."

"I wanted to do something primal. I noticed the energy around had changed since the last collection, and I thought to have a new woman. The look is not as perfect as it was before with matching tops and skirts." Instead, the designer offered a mix and match collage of abstract shapes that wrapped around the body.

Jacquemus' "jazz hands" took shape in the form of "suspenders" in either felted wool or painted directly onto the models' bodies, with wrists and arms stretched over the shoulders reaching toward one's nether region.

In true web 2.0 fashion, the designer teased his new collection via his preferred method of communication, a certain 1:1 digital square. The series was presented in a trio of simple outline drawings of his hand, a single thumb colored in blue ink scribbles.

When we visited the 25 year old designer at his charming Le Marais district atelier, he also shared, "One of the first dresses I made was created using my mother's drapes," à la Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind. The oversize rings seen throughout the collection, some with fabric pulled through them, are a nod to this more innocent time.

His rainbow bright beach ball stripes had all but disappeared, save for one lone red ring on a black dress. And the girls, all barefoot, some even with bare breasts and childlike paper masks over their faces, might've come straight from a Gauguin painting, minus the hue saturation, obviously.

"It's not random," he continued, "but much more spontaneous, like a Gondry film. And it's not about a boy or a girl in the clothes, either. There is no sexuality in this collection. It's simply about playful times, when children just don't care how they dress themselves."

Perhaps that will help explain the collection's many blouses without traditional armholes, but instead a swath of fabric encasing the upper arm like a cask as if a young kid has put his head or arm through the sleeve instead of the garment's neck opening. "Children," he continued,  "they put on many elements, sometimes it's weird, and sometimes it's beautiful."  And that very sentiment perfectly encapsulates this collection. Oh, to have a spotless mind...

Fashion Trends 2015: Iris van Herpen

As Fashion Month F/W 2015 comes to a close with PFW, Interview's seasoned gang of photographers are backstage and front row at our favorite shows. Check in daily and follow us on TwitterFacebook, and Instagram for the latest updates.

Dutch designer Iris van Herpen has always sought inspiration from science: last season it was the Hadron Collider, a particle accelerator at CERN.

This season, it was terraforming—the idea of altering the climate and chemical composition another planet so that it is able to support human life.

This exploration of the terrestrial was reflected in both material and form: form-fitting jackets and full-skirted mini dresses in a translucent, almost holographic gauzy taupe; structured dresses fronted with a circular overlay; and woven metal dresses and high heels.

New York Fashion Week 2015 : Backstage Beauty

New York Fashion Week 2015 came to a close on Thursday and left us with a renewed interest in dark, glamorous beauty. While different designers pursued different makeup approaches, there were two common themes: radiant, one-dimensional skin, and highlighted eyes. The mood shifted from a daytime glow seen last season to a nighttime sultriness. Seductive and slightly disheveled, makeup at New York Fashion Week 2015 felt worn in.

Frame Denim's presentation set the tone for a '70s makeup resurgence. Soft highlighters replaced heavy-handed, deep hued browns for a subtler way to illustrate facial form. Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein opted for hydrating facial masks and moisturizers pre-makeup backstage, which resulted in very clean skin. ( Check out Ebay coupon code march 2015 before shopping at Ebay.com )

At Altuzarra, makeup artists created a blank canvas of skin and finished the look off with a beige lip, making the models' faces fresh, but more subdued than Spring 2015's emphasis on the shiny and dewy.

Eye shadow also made a strong case on the runway. Kohl pencils came out and began framing the eyelids at Rag & Bone. Reminiscent of '20s flappers, the liner created deep-set doe-y eyes. Backstage at DKNY we saw a similar, if more exaggerated, approach with eyeliner used to frame the outer shape of the eyes.

Metallic shadows were used in full force at cult labels Baja East and Delpozo, from covering the entire lid up until the brow at the former to a very thin gold line at the latter. Marc Jacobs went into a deeper molten hue, while others like Karen Walker and Jeremy Scott stuck to bright primary colors to bring out the eye.  Narciso Rodriguez and Thakoon opted for a silky deep beige tone with a subtle reflection.

Top Beauty Trends For Spring 2015

As much as I love checking out all the beauty looks that celebrities are wearing, it’s the runway—not the red carpet—where most trends are really born. (And before that, it’s often the street. Welcome to the beauty circle of life.)

Now that New York Fashion Week has come to a close, I’ve had some time to reflect on all the beauty ideas emerging for spring—although of course, we don’t have to wait that long. We can start wearing them right now! And honestly? This is one of the most eclectic and creative seasons in memory, and I’m super-excited about all of these looks.

I’ve narrowed it down to 10 key trends that you should start looking out for. Some may seem extreme in their runway form (hello, Rodarte!), but remember that everything is exaggerated to the extreme on the catwalk.

From bright shadow colours to natural nail art, here’s your New York beauty briefing:

BARE-FACED BEAUTY

Marc Jacobs sent his models out with NO makeup, save for concealer and lip balm. And I have to laugh, because only in fashion could the makeup artist decide he’s not going to work, and still get paid!

But the broader message here is that real skin is IN. In seasons past it was all about matte or dewy, but always perfected with foundation, concealer and powder. Now, it’s more about being real. And I think that’s a great trend to embrace. (Certainly, it’s more achievable!)

Besides MJ, this look was also seen at 3.1 Phillip Lim and Alexander Wang. At those shows, the makeup played with light and contour so that the skin was bare, but still sculpted. A great product that I like for this trend is the new NARS Contour Blush… it’s very tone-on-tone.

FALL 2015 MEN’S FASHION TRENDS FROM MILAN, NEW YORK, PARIS & LONDON FASHION WEEKS

Fall-Winter 2015 Menswear Fashion Trends–Setting the trends for the season, designers unveiled their fall-winter 2015 menswear collections during Milan Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week 2015, Paris Fashion Week and London Collections: Men. A common thread among the collections was a desire to make wearable, accessible everyday clothing, whether it was formal or casual. Placing the importance on textiles, many of the season’s trends were dictated by fabric choices. From shearling to corduroy, designers revisited classic staples with a modern flair. Other trends to emerge included patchwork, androgyny, a gothic approach to formalwear and the use of animal prints.

Left to Right: Valentino, Jil Sander, Louis Vuitton

FALL 2015 MENSWEAR TREND: SHEARLING OUTERWEAR

Dressed in rich, autumnal tones, Pilati’s take on corduroy staples were simply luxurious.

Bottega Veneta Fall-Winter 2015 Menswear Collection. Taking a relaxed approach to the season, Bottega Veneta creative director Tomas Maier delivered a cheeky collection with loose, slouchy proportions. Inspired by the idea of sweatpants and leisurewear, among the affair was a rich, double-breasted, gray corduroy jacket.

Fendi Fall-Winter 2015 Menswear Collection. Silvia Fendi had corduroy on the mind for fall, but also the shearling trend. Manipulating shearling, Fendi created a faux corduroy for the collection, sending rich brown imitations down the catwalk. The tailored fits were easily a success, contributing to smart coordinated ensembles.

FALL 2015 MENSWEAR TREND: MODERN ANDROGYNY / 70S REVIVAL
CHANNEL YOUR INNER BOWIE WITH AN ANDROGYNOUS APPROACH TO THE SEASON.

Left to Right: Gucci, Rick Owens, Raf Simons

Rick Owens Fall-Winter 2015 Collection. Designer Rick Owens made headlines with his fall collection. Sending his models down the catwalk in revealing clothes that featured the penis on display, Owens championed equal objectification. Long tunics in earthy hues contributed to a unisex look.

J.W. Anderson Fall-Winter 2015 Menswear Collection. Designer Jonathan Anderson makes it no secret that he is inspired by womenswear when it comes to designing for his men. Anderson’s soft silhouettes called on the 1970s for inspiration.

BLACK MAY BE A CLASSIC, BUT THIS SEASON, IT’S FORMAL BLACK THAT’S IN VOGUE.

Left to Right: Thom Browne, Dior Homme, Junya Watanabe

Dior Homme Fall-Winter 2015 Menswear Collection. One idea that Dior Homme creative director Kris Van Assche prides himself on is making menswear accessible. Taking traditional pieces in a sportier direction, Van Assche set his sights on the tuxedo for part of his latest collection. The results were effortless proportions that deviated from the standard, adding length and style.

Thom Browne Fall-Winter 2015 Menswear Collection. American designer Thom Browne staged an impressive funeral for his fall outing in Paris. The star of the event was the mourning suit, revisited in chic layers with impeccable fits. If a long skirt isn’t your cup of tea, Browne had plenty of his trademark skinny trousers.

Junya Watanabe Fall-Winter 2015 Menswear Collection. Known for its clothes that have a charming, rustic quality, Junya Watanabe deviated from the usual path for fall, presenting formalwear reworked for everyday style. Striking to say the least, smart tailoring and fabric choices solidified a strong fall collection.
